What does meditating on the word of God look like practically? I have good news for you – Christian meditation is ultra-practical and easy to work into your schedule. If you only have five minutes per day, you can meditate on God’s Word for greater peace. It’s that simple.

What You Need to Start Your Meditation

All you need for meditation on God’s Word is your Bible, paper and a pen or pencil. You’ll choose one verse from your daily reading as your meditation verse.

You may want to use an additional reading plan. You can also rely on the structure of the One Year Bible or a chronological Bible. If you simply want to read through books of the Bible at your own pace, good places to start are one Psalm per day, or one chapter of the book of John per day. A concordance will help you do a topical study on a certain subject. It’s up to you what to pick as your focus, and what tools will help you do that in a convenient way.

Once you’ve read through your daily scripture, choose a single verse that holds the most meaning for you. Maybe it’s relevant to a struggle in your life, or perhaps it’s something you want to pursue.

How to Make Meditation Part of Your Day

Now it’s time to get practical. Write that verse out on a piece of paper. You may want to have a dedicated notebook, a 3 x 5 card, or a sticky note handy. We’ll talk about the applications in a minute. The main point is to write out your verse. By writing it out, you have a 40 percent better chance of remembering it over just reading it.

Now that your verse is written down, be sure to display it in key areas so you can keep meditating on it during the day. Are you a paper planner fan? Put the sticky note of your verse inside your day planner and meditate on it when you glance at your planner. Sticky notes also work great for car dashboards, bathroom mirrors and desktop computers.

A 3 x 5 card is handy for places where you need it to stand up, like kitchen windowsills, baby changing tables or office desks. You can meditate on your verse while washing dishes, changing diapers, or completing work tasks.

If you use a dedicated notebook for your daily verses, keep it open on your tabletop. Glance at the verse of the day every time you pass by that table. Each time you see the written verse, you’ll be reconnected to God and reminded of his truth.

The Benefits of Christian Meditation

With these visual cues, you’ll be hiding God’s Word in your heart and mind several times per day, rather than simply in one sitting. The more often you meditate on his Word, the more peace you will experience. You’ll also be better equipped for spiritual battles and interpersonal struggles.

Take these practical steps to help God’s Word sink deep into your memory so it can strengthen your faith.
