Carrying Your Small Light for God's Glory
From the 21-Day Light of the World Advent Devotional
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (Matt. 5:14).
One of my favorite parts of the Olympics has always been the passing of the torch. It has traveled the dirt roads of humble villages and the streets of bustling city centers. It has passed through the hands of elderly statesmen and elite athletes. Through free countries and oppressed ones, it always makes its way to the cauldron where the oil is primed to catch fire and remain lit for the season.
What is so inspirational about this flame that we tune in to watch? It starts small and safe enough to be held by human hands. But it represents something greater than itself–the coming together of nations in peace. This is not unlike the light that we carry within us.
Day by day, we go about our lives–reading the news, making meals, greeting a neighbor, tending to our work. But inside of us burns the good news of the Gospel. Inside of us is a heart being renewed and a mind being transformed daily into God’s image (2 Cor. 4:16). As ordinary as we may feel, there is something extraordinary beneath the surface, just waiting to touch a slick of oil and ignite the heart of another.
Our world is desperate for light and life. Can you hear it in the political conflicts, relational fallouts, and quest for status? People have an unquenchable desire to be lit up with something that will endure beyond their years, to be fulfilled, to know that they matter. You are carrying what may feel like a measly flame, but it is backed with all of the power and love of the Savior. It is not about you at all–the runner who carries the torch for a bit and passes it along–but about glorifying the Father.
And what does He ask of us? To preach to hundreds or feed thousands? No. He asks only that we not hide the hope we have (Matt. 5:15-16). He asks that we be willing for Him to be revealed in us daily, with our small fire, so that He can multiply it and accomplish something greater in the world. He says to put the light on a stand and let people gather to its warmth. Through ordinary and small acts, they will meet the great Light that will never be extinguished.
Prayer: Father God, I am overwhelmed at times with the calling to be your hands and feet. I don’t always know the best way to be a light. Would you help me have the courage to let more people into the goodness I have found in you? Fill me with your love and empower my words so that I can bring more glory to your name. Amen.

What emotions do you experience when you think about reaching out to others who don’t know Jesus?
Consider what individuals regularly cross your path. Write the first few names that come to mind and ask God to show you how you can be a blessing to them, either with a word of encouragement, a prayer, or a small gift.
