The greatest demonstration: Receiving God's undeserved love
Love is displayed in a variety of ways. A husband expresses love with unexpected flowers. A mother shows love with a home-cooked meal. A child professes love with a hand-drawn card. A friend communicates love with a regular phone call. But no act of affection can compare to God’s demonstration of love for us.
The Bible says, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, NIV). Out of love, God sent His Son to die for sinners. Not because any one person was found good or deserving or clean from sin, but simply because He loves His children.
God didn’t wait for people to become lovable to demonstrate His love for us. Instead, out of His great love He came to man and loved us first. This type of love is called agape. It’s the highest form of love because it originates from God and it’s unmerited, unconditional and freely given.
Sometimes God’s amazing love can seem too good to be true. One might think, “I really messed up this time or I don’t measure up. How can God love me?” In moments like this, doubt begins to grow and growing doubt is fertile ground for enemy attack. Satan will do everything possible to convince God’s children they are undeserving of God’s love. The truth is no one deserves it, but the enemy wants Christians to forget this important truth: God loved us at our worst, before we knew Christ, when we were deep in sin and separated from Him.
God’s giving of His Son stands as the greatest act of love shown in the history of the world. In times of doubt, instead of relying on feelings to experience God’s love, look to the person of Jesus. Jesus is proof of God’s love and Jesus gave His life so we could know for certain how deeply God loves us.
